A seven-year-old boy has died in a freak accident when he was playing and bouncing on a sofa before falling through a glass coffee table.
The young boy was rushed to hospital and died while he was being treated in a clinic after his chest was pierced by shards of razor-sharp glass.
The horror incident took place in the family home in Banting in western Peninsular Malaysia on September 16.
Muhammad Arif Fayyadh Wahyu Asmi was jumping up and down on his living room sofa at around 4pm when he accidentally landed on the glass surface of a coffee table which was in front of the sofa.
Kuala Langat district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Ridhwan Mohd Nor Saleh told local media: "The incident resulted in the victim's chest being pierced by glass shards.
"The victim was rushed to a nearby clinic before being taken to Banting Hospital and confirmed dead while receiving emergency treatment."
The police chief reported that the schoolboy would undergo an autopsy to confirm his cause of death.
"During the incident, the victim was said to be playing alone, while the victim's parents were also in the house," a statement said.
Police are investigating the incident as a potential case of negligence, abandonment, or exposing a child in a manner that is likely to cause him or her physical or emotional injury.
If anyone is found guilty, they could face up to a decade behind bars or a large fine.
