Boy, 5, who sent Queen letter while on holiday receives response day after she dies

James McConnell Queen Elizabeth II King Charles III Platinum Jubilee

A five-year-old boy received one of the last letters ever to be sent out by the Queen, a day after she died. Young James McConnell, from Birtley in Gateshead, wrote a letter to the Queen while on holiday with his family to London during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier this year.

In the letter, the lad wrote: ''Dear Queen, Happy 70th Platinum Jubilee. Thank you from James.'' His father, Graeme McConnell was shocked when James received a response to his letter from Buckingham Palace on Friday, the day after her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II passed away.

The card which contained a picture of the Queen and a message inside, was dated September 8 - the day the Queen died. The message said: "I send you my grateful thanks for your kind message on the occasion of the Seventieth Anniversary of my Accession to the Throne, Elizabeth R, 2022".
