Schoolboy, 17, dies and another injured during pedestrian, car collision in Carlingford

A teenage boy has died and another is in hospital after they were hit by a car while walking from school in Sydney's north-west on Thursday morning.

Police have confirmed a 17-year-old boy died at the scene on Rembrandt Street, Carlingford following the crash about 11:20am.

A second 17-year-old boy was injured and has been taken to the Children's Hospital at Westmead.

A spokesperson for the NSW Department of Education this evening said both boys were Year 12 students at Carlingford High School.

At the time of the incident, they were walking with a third student, who was not injured.

"We are deeply saddened by the death of a Carlingford High School student. Our thoughts are with the student's family, friends and the entire school community at this difficult time," the spokesperson said.

"Another student was seriously injured and is being treated at hospital. A third student was uninjured and is being supported by the school.

"The school is in contact with the families. Wellbeing support is being provided to students and staff, with additional counsellors deployed to the school today and tomorrow."

The car driver, a 90-year-old woman, was taken to Westmead Hospital for mandatory tests.

"Officers from Ryde Police Area Command have established a crime scene, which will be examined by specialist officers attached to the Crash Investigation Unit," NSW Police said.

One witness told the ABC he saw the incident unfold and rushed to aid the injured boys.

The man, a mechanic, said he was working on a car when the 90-year-old crashed into his van.

Footage from the scene shows a silver car had crashed into a white van which appears to be located in a driveway on the other side of a footpath.

The witness said a group of schoolchildren were walking on the footpath when the car hit a kerb, clipped a tree and continued into the group.

In the aerial footage, a team of paramedics could be seen huddled around one patient on a stretcher before that patient was loaded into an ambulance.

Investigations continue and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers.
