Alec Mullen insists Irvine’s boxing scene is in tip-top shape – thanks to a boom in young fighters.
The Irvine Vineburgh coach says he’s never been busier in the 16 years since forming the Oaklands Avenue club.
Now he’s hoping to help his new breed of boxers take their first steps towards glory.
Fledgling fighters Lucas Boyd, 10, Lloyd Clark, 11, Kyle McGowan, 13, and Nathan Lewis, 18, are set to test themselves at the Scottish Novice Championships next month.
And Alec is hopeful all four can come back winners.
He said: “They’ve definitely got the talent to succeed.
“There’s a real buzz about the club just now. Classes are packed and we get up to 70 boxers through the doors every week.
“Fitness and mental health are massive these days and boxing is a great way to help with that. It really helps build confidence and you can see that in the kids.”
Irvine Vineburgh Boxing Club meet and train at the John Mullen Health and Fitness Centre, Oaklands Avenue, Irvine.
