Two drivers have been rushed to hospital after a head-on crash on William Hovell Drive just before 7am.
The two are thought to have serious injuries after the collision between two cars, one of which was a Camry and the other a Hyundai Tucson SUV.
The police said in the late morning that the road was expected to be closed in both directions "for the foreseeable future". In the end, it was closed for about six hours, reopening around 1pm.
A police "major crash team" was on the scene for much of that time. The road is three lane with a double white line separating two lanes from the other one. It is clear that one of the cars crossed that line.
Fire and ambulance crews were also there, west of the John Gorton Drive and Coppings Crossing Road intersection.
Two hours later, one motorist said that every alternative route through back streets in Belconnen was "backed up".
Motorists were unable to turn right onto William Hovell Drive from Drake-Brockman Drive, and traffic was backed up along Southern Cross Drive at 8.30am.
Motorists were advised to use an alternative route, causing traffic delays into the city.
The incident was reported on the ACT Emergency Services Agency incident map at 7.15am.
