The Boston Celtics have a great deal of faith in veteran point guard Derrick White, having make the Colorado native the franchise’s starting floor general in a critical season in which the team hopes to contend. And while Boston is not exactly upset about the fact that they have White on one of the better-value deals in the league for a player of his caliber, there is also a case to be made for locking up the University of Colorado native longer term.
In a recent article assessing the NBA’s extension landscape by HoopsHype cap expert Yossi Gozlan, White was assessed as having a decent chance of being extended this October, when he becomes eligible for an extension worth as much as $85.4 million over three seasons.
Having already earned $40 million in the course of his pro career, White would double his career earnings to date with such an offer, but such a move would need a quick turnaround to pull of for both parties given the deal would only be allowed if completed by the start of the regular season a few weeks later.

“The Celtics will depend on Derrick White more now after trading Marcus Smart,” surmises Gozlan. “However, his tight eligibility window could delay a deal until next year.”
