Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued a heartfelt apology today to the families of two men who were wrongly accused in a high-profile murder case that rocked the city 34 years ago. In October 1989, Carol Stewart, a white mom-to-be from the suburbs, was tragically shot in the head inside her car, while her husband, Charles, was shot in the chest beside her. Charles had initially told police that a black man was responsible for the crime, sparking a ruthless police investigation that unleashed a wave of racial tension and division within Boston.
During the investigation, the Boston Police Department launched a fierce campaign targeting black men throughout the city, ultimately unjustly implicating two individuals, Alan Swanson and Willie Bennett, as suspects in the case. Despite never being formally charged, their lives were forever impacted by the false accusations made against them. The long-standing pain and anguish endured by Swanson, Bennett, and their families, as well as the broader Boston black community, has been immeasurable.
