If you take into account the limits that the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement set on player compensation, there are always going to be players — even on max deals — who are making less than they would otherwise. To such an end, HoopsHype’s Frank Urbina put together a list of the most underpaid players in the league based on H/H’s Real Value metric.
Interestingly, a Boston Celtics star is the No. 2 player on the list; All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum, who earned $30,351,780 in 2022-23, ought to have made $55,282,823 per Real Value. “Tatum won All-Star Game MVP this year, was 1st Team All-NBA and led the Celtics to a 57-win season and to within a game of reaching the finals for a second straight year before falling short to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.”
“With Tatum overperforming his max-level salary, the Celtics will continue to have a chance to build contenders around him for years to come,” Urbina added.
