The Boston Celtics have had trouble against lesser teams on paper for much of the 2022-23 season for some reason, and against a banged-up Washington Wizards roster on Tuesday night, that trend continued. Boston’s focus on offense quickly waned while their defense was disjointed and half-hearted at best, the Celtics came out like an unserious team that should not be expected to win much of anything given how late in the season it is and how high the stakes in terms of seeding.
Head coach Joe Mazzulla pulled the starters at about the halfway point of the game’s final frame, ceding the floor to a cadre of players who at least played with a modicum of effort. Jayson Tatum put up a respectable if typically inefficient from deep 28 points, 9 boards, and 5 assists. Jaylen Brown mustered 18 points.
The rest of the starters should take a long, hard look in the mirror to see if they actually want to bother with this whole “playoffs” thing or get a start on their summer vacation early.
