Boris Johnson has been installed as third favourite to be the next leader of the Conservative Party. The former prime minister is priced at 6/1 to lead the Tories again according to betting website Paddy Power, behind only Kemi Badenoch at 11/2 and Rishi Sunak at 4/1 .
William Hill has given similar odds, with Johnson, Badenoch and Michael Gove all tied at 7/1 and Sunak leading on 4/1. According to Oddschecker.com, which compares odds from the UK's leading bookmakers, Johnson has a 10/1 chance of replacing Truss.
This is despite him being forced to stand down in July following an exodus of members from his own government and a number of scandals, most notably the illegal parties that were held in Downing Street and Whitehall during the Covid-19 pandemic.
While betting is opened on the next Tory leader, punters are gambling on how long under-fire Truss can survive in office. William Hill says the chances of her leaving the role are 7/2 for this year and 5/4 for 2023, with only a 2/1 chance of being prime minister after the next general election.
Recent analysis conducted by market research company Ipsos showed that only 20% of the public thought Truss was doing a good job, with Labour leading on a number of key issues.
