Boris Johnson says he is 'proud of his leadership' at last Prime Minister's Questions

Boris Johnson has said he is "proud of his leadership" and will leave office with his "head held high", in what could prove to be his last Prime Minister's Questions.

The comments come a week after Mr Johnson was forced to quit after dozens of senior and junior ministers resigned over his handling of yet another serious scandal.

The Prime Minister was bullish in the Commons however, saying: "It's perfectly true that I leave not at a time of my choosing but I am proud of the fantastic teamwork that has been involved in all of those projects nationally and internationally.

"I'm also proud of the leadership that I have given and I will be leaving with my head held high."

Mr Johnson said any of the eight “brilliant” candidates vying to be the next Conservative Party leader would “wipe the floor” with Sir Keir Starmer, who he dubbed “Captain Crasheroony Snoozefest”.

He said: “Anyone would wipe the floor with Captain Crasheroony Snoozefest. And after a few weeks’ time, that is exactly what they will do. They will unite around the winner and they will do just that.”

Sir Keir hit back saying that former chancellor Rishi Sunak had “implied that the Prime Minister cannot tell the public the truth” in his resignation letter.

He asked: “Yesterday Mr Sunak claimed his big plan is to rebuild the economy. Even the Prime Minister must be impressed by that Johnsonian brassneckery.

“Can the Prime Minister think of any jobs his former chancellor may have had that means he bears some responsibility for an economy that he now claims is broken?”

Mr Johnson replied: “I think everybody who has played a part in the last three years has done a remarkable job in helping this country through very difficult times.”
