Who could replace Boris Johnson in the role of prime minister?
The Tory party has fallen further behind in polls following a tumultuous week which saw more than a 50 MPs resign from government in protest at Boris Johnson’s leadership.
YouGov showed Labour expanded its lead over the Conservatives to 11 points in a poll conducted before the prime minister resigned.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson is facing mounting calls to leave office straight away after saying he would remain in Downing Street until his successor is chosen.
The treasurer of the Tory backbench committee even said Dominic Raab would be caretaker prime minister instead in an “ideal world” but conceded that “ship has sailed”.
“We must now live with the fact that Boris Johnson will be prime minister until a successor can be voted on,” Sir Geoffrey Clinton-Brown.
Labour’s Angela Rayner said Labour will call a no-confidence vote in the PM if the Conservative party does not get rid of him immediately.
