Boris Johnson receives first edition Winston Churchill books as farewell gift

Minister presented Boris Johnson with Winston Churchill’s six volume history on the Second World War after what is likely to be his final Cabinet meeting as Prime Minister on Tuesday morning.

Following a catastrophic loss of confidence from his own ministers and MPs, the Prime Minister announced earlier this month that he will leave office once a new leader of the Tory party is announced by September 5.

But with Parliament set to break for the summer recess on Thursday, Tuesday’s meeting of his Cabinet was the last scheduled meeting of his top ministerial team before he exits No10.

Mr Johnson is expected to take his final PMQs as Prime Minister on Wednesday.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “At the conclusion of Cabinet the Prime Minister was presented with gifts to thank him for his service to the country including first editions of Winston Churchill’s books on the Second World War.”

The spokesman said each member of cabinet personally contributed to the series of books written by his hero, the value of which was not given by Downing Street.

He added that Mr Johnson was also presented a signed picture of his Cabinet team, taken on Tuesday.

Cabinet Office minister Nigel Adams paid tribute to the Prime Minister on behalf of his fellow ministers who was given a round of applause at the end of the presentation.

Mr Johnson’s spokesman said the Prime Minister reminded his Cabinet colleagues that it was important they remained focused on issues impacting the public.
