Boris Johnson ready to cooperate with police investigation into Downing St lockdown parties

Boris Johnson is ready to hand over his mobile phone, documents and to be interviewed if asked to by Scotland Yard probing a series of gatherings in Downing Street which may have breached covid laws.

The Prime Minister is facing the prospect of being grilled by Scotland Yard after Metropolitan Police Commissioner Dame Cressida Dick confirmed her officers are now investigating “a number of events” in Downing Street in relation to potential coronavirus regulation breaches.

Following the latest bombshell twist in the partygate scandal, the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said that anyone asked for information by the Metropolitan Police “would be expected to co-operate in any way they are asked to”.

Pressed if this included Johnson being interviewed by the police, he added: “Anyone asked to will co-operate fully as you would expect.”

Asked if this included handing over his mobile phone, documents and diaries to the police, the official added: “As with the investigation, that has always been the case, that we have sought to provide any requisite information to the investigation team and that sort of co-operation will continue.”

According to his official spokesman Boris Johnson does not believe he has broken the law.

Asked whether the Prime Minister thinks he may have broken the law, his spokesman told lobby journalists in Westminster: “It’s fair to say he does not. But beyond that I don’t want to pre-empt the work (of the police).”

The spokesman added that Johnson would co-operate fully with the police investigation.
