Boris Johnson is now more likely than not to step down as PM this year as he becomes odds-on with Betfair at 20/21 to quit in 2022 according to one bookmaker. Betfair Exchange also said that Penny Mourdaunt was the new clear favourite to be the next Conservative leader at 6/1, ahead of Jeremy Hunt, Ben Wallace and Liz Truss at 8/1.
It said the Tories were now 3/1 to win an overall majority at the next General Election, while Labour were 4/1. The updated odds come as the Government battles the ongoing cost of living crisis, as well as the fallout from Partygate and the latest furore around Chris Pincher MP, who quit as deputy chief whip and was suspended from the Conservative party after allegations he had groped two men in a private club while drunk.
Betfair Exchange has Mr Johnson at 20/21 to leave office in 2022. For those who think he'll be off next year, the odds are currently 7/2. You can get 5/2 if you think he will last to 2024 or later.
For next Conservative leader, Penny Mordaunt is favourite at 6/1, with Jeremy Hunt, Ben Wallace and Liz Truss all at 8/1. Chancellor Rishi Sunak comes in at 10/1, Tom Tugendhat at 11/1 and Nadhim Zahawi at 12/1.
Betfair spokesperson Sam Rosbottom said: “Boris Johnson is now odds-on at 20/21 to quit as PM this year. Having seemed to defy the odds for a while, the betting now indicates it’s more likely than not that the PM steps down before 2022 is out, with Penny Mourdaunt the clear favourite to replace him.”
