Boris Johnson has reportedly hired lawyers to fight party fines

Boris Johnson has reportedly hired lawyers to fight the investigation into his role in parties held in and around Downing Street during lockdown.

The Prime Minister is among 50 people under investigation by the Met Police for more than a dozen events held around Westminster while Covid restrictions were in place.

According to The Mirror, Mr Johnnson has hired lawyers to help him fill in his questionnaire.

The paper says his lawyers will argue Mr Johnson is in a “unique” situation as Downing Street is his home and workplace, meaning he did not technically breach any Covid rules.

Senior law lecturer Dr Nick McKerrell suggested the Tory leader could return the questionnaire blank as he has the right to remain silent.

The Glasgow Caledonian University expert told the BBC it is “unusual” for police to use one in a criminal probe.

He added: “How do you speak to someone over things that happened months ago, especially when the maximum offence is a fine?”

The PM is reported to have attended at least seven out of 12 lockdown parties being probed.
