Boris Johnson has been blasted for trying to get his wife Carrie a government job and another with the Royal family.
Labour MP Chris Elmore opened Prime Minister’s Questions with a rocket loaded with report that Johnson discussed environmental roles for his wife in autumn 2020, either for the Cop26 summit or with the Royal Family.
It follows on from weekend claims that Johnson tried to hire his then lover as his chief of staff when he was Foreign Secretary in 2018.
Chris Elmore asked the Prime Minister to “be honest” when answering his yes or no question: “Has he ever considered the appointment of his current spouse to a government post or to any organisation in one of the royal households?
Johnson dodged the attack and failed to issue a denial.
Instead he told the Commons: “I know why the party opposite wants to talk about nonexistent jobs in the media, because they don’t want to talk about what’s going on in the real world.”
But Labour’s Keir Starmer returned to the issue in his clashes with the Prime Minister.
When Johnson accused the Labour leader not being able to exercise authority over his shadow cabinet, Starmer shot back: “If I do need advice, say about £100,000 job at the Foreign Office. I will ask him for a recommendation.”
Downing Street has said Johnson never recommended Carrie for a government role, but have not directly denied that such a move was considered or discussed.
The Times newspaper reported on Saturday that Johnson tried to hire Carrie as his chief of staff while at the the Foreign Office and while still married to his former wife.
The article was pulled from later editions of the newspaper and Downing Street admitted there were conversations but the article was removed from later editions.
