'Boris Johnson decided to lift all Covid restrictions to avoid leadership challenge'

Bringing forward the lifting of all Covid restrictions will be welcomed by some - and feared by others.

Many will be pleased to see an end to the disruption the country has had to accept as the price for controlling the pandemic.

But we should not ignore those with chronic conditions and low immunity not able to live a normal life because of the virus. Nor should we forget nearly 300 a day still die from Covid.

People would have more confidence in Boris Johnson ’s decision to end restrictions early if it had been made in the presence of advisers Sir Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance.

Their absence yesterday only fuels the theory this was a political decision by a Prime Minister desperate to please his backbench MPs and so avoid a leadership challenge.

The PM used to claim he was guided by the science. Now he appears to be led by what is politically expedient.

People do care

The Met are looking at whether another Downing Street get-together meets the threshold for a criminal investigation.

This follows the Mirror’s publication of a photo of Boris Johnson and colleagues by an open bottle of Champagne at a Christmas quiz.

The U-turn by the police raises questions about their original investigation. But the PM also has questions to answer.

No 10 repeatedly denied any parties, then changed its line to say any gatherings were within the rules. Both these defences fell apart.

The new leader of the Commons Mark Spencer yesterday claimed people in the real world did not care about partygate.

He should know that people do care about trust in politics and do care that rule makers should not be rule breakers.

Notting thrill

Notting Hill has topped a poll of people’s favourite romantic comedies.

Others may not see its appeal but they do say love is blind.
