Boris Johnson announces replacements for Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid after pair quit government

Boris Johnson has announced his replacements for Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid after they sensationally quit Cabinet earlier tonight. The Prime Minister has appointed Steve Barclay as Health Secretary replacing Javid, while Nadhim Zahawi is the new Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Sunak and Javid quit moments after one another over the Chris Pincher debacle and while Johnson was issuing an apology. Sunak said in his resignation letter "the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously", adding "I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning."

Javid said the British people "expect integrity from their government" but voters now believed Mr Johnson's administration was neither competent nor "acting in the national interest".
