Border Congressman calls for bipartisan action on immigration crisis

Congressman criticizes Biden administration's response to border crisis.

The ongoing crisis at the southern border continues to be a topic of concern and debate, with members of both parties grappling with the Biden administration's response. Democratic Congressman from Texas, Henry Cuellar, recently shared his perspective on the matter during an interview.

Cuellar, who has spent his entire life on the border, expressed his belief that the Biden administration's response to the crisis has not been acceptable thus far. He emphasized the need for President Biden to address the American public directly and acknowledge the humanitarian crisis at the border. Cuellar suggested that the administration should take decisive action and work towards finding solutions.

The congressman stressed the importance of addressing the issue of asylum criteria early in the process. He argued that individuals who do not meet the criteria should be promptly deported to their countries of origin. Cuellar warned that without showing repercussions for those who do not qualify for asylum, the pull factor prompting people to migrate to the border will persist.

Cuellar also criticized the administration's handling of the crisis, pointing to the historic influx of people crossing the border. He lamented that the situation has been continuously worsening over the past few years and called for a bipartisan approach to finding a compromise that would change laws and allocate funding effectively.

Highlighting a concerning statistic, he mentioned that more than 70% of migrants encountered at the border are being released after failing to meet the credible fear threshold for asylum. Cuellar argued that this release policy sends a signal to potential economic migrants, which fuels the influx of individuals seeking better economic opportunities.

In response to the question of whether he would support a vote to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, Cuellar stated that he would vote against such a motion. Instead, he emphasized the need to work with Mayorkas and provide the necessary resources and policy changes to address the crisis effectively, including funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportations.

The congressman's remarks shed light on the challenges and complexities associated with the border crisis. While recognizing the need for stronger action, Cuellar emphasized the importance of a bipartisan approach and taking steps to address the root causes and pull factors driving the surge in migration.
