Border bill vote expected to fail despite bipartisan efforts

Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., the lead GOP negotiator on a border-foreign aid package, speaks with reporters outside the chamber at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024. Any bipartisan b

In a crucial development on Capitol Hill, a bipartisan compromise on a border bill is expected to face failure after a key procedural vote. Arizona Senator Houston Sinema, a key negotiator, expressed her frustration on the Senate floor ahead of the vote. Over the past five months, Sinema and her Republican colleague, Senator James Lankford, have been working tirelessly to address the long-standing border crisis affecting their state.

Senator Lankford, known for his expertise and knowledge of border security policy, was appointed by his conference to partner with Senator Sinema on the Homeland Security Border Management Subcommittee. The duo has been collaborating for over five years and even visited the Arizona border together to gain first-hand insight into the challenges faced there.

To address the crisis, Senator Lankford outlined four pillars that the Republican conference believed were vital for securing the border. The first pillar centers around asylum, with a focus on raising the asylum standard and closing the loopholes that allow cartels and economic migrants to exploit the system. The second pillar aims to establish a safe third country policy, ensuring that individuals who have already lived safely in another country do not overwhelm the system due to their ineligibility for asylum. The third pillar seeks to create a mechanism similar to Title 42, granting authorities the ability to shut down the border temporarily when the system is overwhelmed. The final pillar is aimed at curbing parole, putting a stop to the administration's practice of allowing migrants at the border to gain entry into the country without proper vetting.

Throughout their arduous negotiations, Senator Sinema emphasized the realities on the ground at the Arizona border, highlighting the urgent need for these four key pillars. Over a period of nearly five months, both senators diligently worked on navigating complex policy decisions to reach a consensus.

The failure of the bipartisan compromise is expected, despite the substantial efforts made by the negotiation team. Former President Trump has expressed his dissatisfaction with the bill, further complicating its chances of success.

The border crisis has plagued Arizona for over 40 years, prompting Senator Sinema to devote her time and energy to finding a solution. While the bill faces an uncertain future, the collaborative efforts of Senator Sinema, Senator Lankford, and others involved underline the importance of addressing the challenges at the border and finding comprehensive solutions.
