Bookshop with controversial Prince Harry memoir display say it was just a 'light-hearted joke'

The memoir of Prince Harry, Spare, has been on everyone's minds since it was first mentioned but now the full book is available in stores to buy.

One creative window display caught the internet's attention as it appeared to poke fun at the memoir and its impact on the Royal Family. Bert's Books in Swindon, Wiltshire tweeted their window display with the caption: "Anyway, we do have some spare copies of Spare if you want one."

The window showed Spare alternating with Bella Mackie's book How to Kill Your Family on a shelving unit in a tongue in cheek display marking the first day of UK sales on January 10.

Manager Alex Call, 35, said: "To be honest it was a light-hearted joke with the first customers of the day and to be fair Bella Mackie's book was already in our window.

"It was the best-selling book in our shop and we thought it would make everyone laugh and it has.

"Most people have taken it in the spirit it was intended but some people think we are being a bit mean about it."

Bookshops across the country had people queuing up in hopes of getting their hands on the first copies. The memoir details Prince Harry's time and problems within his family, especially when concerning his brother and father.

At Bert's Books, however there was no such rush for the royal memoir, despite their eye-catching window.

Alex said: "We have sold a couple but it is quiet in the shop - it always is on a Tuesday morning.

"I'm not expecting a rush but a couple of copies have been sold."

Many people took to social media to react to the display, after the team posted a photo on Twitter.

One person said: "Now I am going to spend all day thinking of other books to pair." Another said: "Someone give them a prize for the best window display."

One user added: "This is how clever I aspire to be."
