Bob Dylan was treated to an unusual street performance in Glasgow on Monday night after his sell out gigs in the city. The tables were turned on the legendary musician, 81, when he was serenaded by a Scottish showbiz reporter outside his hotel.
Former Daily Record journalist Bev Lyons tracked down the reclusive star at The Kimpton Blythswood Square before singing 'Make You Feel My Love' as he got into a black motor waiting on the street. Dylan didn’t appear to respond to the rousing rendition of his hit song and was wearing a face mask and his hood up as he headed for the car.
An eye witness said: "Bob just came out of a side door and looked briefly over as a couple of fans approached him but he stepped into his car. He heard his song being sung but he wasn’t stopping for anyone. He did look out of the window at one point but his security were keen to get him moving."
The icon looked relaxed in black boots, black trousers and a black leather jacket with grey hooded top underneath as he headed for the car, accompanied by a staff member. Hotel and Dylan's own personal security swiftly ushered the megastar into the waiting vehicle, which had blacked out windows.
As the singer sped away in the back of the car, his much loved song could still be heard being belted out. He had just played two nights at the Glasgow Armadillo on October 30 and 31, which were his first tour dates in Scotland in five years, where he had banned audience members from having a camera or phone during the gig.
The much-respected songwriter, who uses soft lighting on stage, had previously asked the crowd to arrive promptly at the venue, telling them they wouldn’t get in if they were late and banning anyone from entering or reentering the room after he started singing.
Despite his age, The Rough And Rowdy Ways Worldwide Tour began last December in Milwaukee, USA. Since then, he has played stellar concerts all over the world, performing to tens of thousands of rapturous fans.
Dylan, who claimed in 2008 that his biggest inspiration is Rabbie Burns, played his first Scottish gig in 1966 in Glasgow, last played Scotland at the Armadillo in 2017. For most of his career he’s played the SECC although he did play Stirling Castle in 2001.
