Bolton Wanderers confirm eight players released & Xavier Amaechi decision made

Bolton Wanderers have announced six senior players will be released this summer after the end of the League One season.

Wanderers finished ninth in the third tier of English football after a successful campaign following promotion out of League Two in the 2020/21 season.

Ian Evatt's side ended up 10 points from the play-offs after reaching a tally of 73 and have their sights set on reducing that gap to the play-off spots over the summer. Wanderers are seeking to challenge for the top six at the least next campaign.

Wanderers strengthened heavily in the January transfer window and are poised to recruit again this summer to add further strength in depth to the squad to help it compete at the top end of League One.

Wanderers have seven first team players out of contract this summer, incuding Alex Baptiste, Andrew Tutte, Nathan Delfouneso, Liam Edwards, Liam Gordon, Adam Senior and Reiss Greenidge.

And the retained list has been confirmed by the club now and only Senior out of this group of seven will be offered a fresh contract, with the remainder being released after not having their deals renewed.

Greenidge is out on loan at Barnet and his Bolton career had essentially come to an end already with the Bees having the option to make the move permanent this summer.

Delfouneso is currently out on loan at League Two Bradford City, with Edwards at non-league side Southport and central midfielder Tutte has made just one appearance this season owing to injury problems.

Youngsters Finlay Lockett and Luke Hutchinson have also had options on their deals taken up to keep them at Wanderers.

Young goalkeeper Matty Alexander and teenage striker Jay Fitzmartin have also been released, meaning eight players in total will be leaving Wanderers this summer.

Loanee Xavier Amaechi will also head back to Hamburg following a season long loan and will not return to Wanderers after an injury-hit campaign limited his time to 12 appearances.

Goalkeeper Matt Gilks has come to the end of his playing career, too, but will remain at the club as part of Evatt's backroom staff as the goalkeeping coach.

A club statement read: "Wanderers thank and express their gratitude to all the players for their efforts and commitment during their time with the club and wish them well in their future careers."
