Bolton Wanderers clarity on Wigan Athletic clash as Portsmouth League One question remains

Bolton Wanderers' away clash against Wigan Athletic in League One should be able to go ahead as planned and not have to be rearranged after the Latics were dumped out of the Papa John's Trophy.

Wanderers are poised to head to the DW Stadium on Saturday, April 2, for a 3pm League One clash.

The Latics were in action in the Papa John's Trophy last night at the semi-final stage of the competition as they hosted League Two Sutton United at the DW Stadium.

Leam Richardson's side went behind thanks to Will Randall's finish for Sutton before James McClean equalised not long after.

The game ended up going to extra time and then to penalties, with Sutton goalkeeper Dean Bouzanis proving the hero as he saved efforts from Max Power and Tendayi Darikwa as the visitors booked their place at Wembley.

Sutton will discover their opponents this evening as the victors of Rotherham United and Hartlepool United will face them.

The London side will head to Wembley on Sunday, April 3, to play the final of the competition.

And because of Sutton reaching the final rather than the Latics, it means Wigan's League One clash against Bolton which is due to take place that weekend along with the Wembley showpiece, is able to go ahead as originally planned and will not have to rearranged because of Richardson's no longer facing the prospect of a trip to the capital.

The Latics won the reverse fixture at the University of Bolton Stadium in October 4-0 thanks to goals from Will Keane, Callum Lang and a James McClean brace.

There remains a question mark over the clash against Portsmouth which is due to take place on Saturday, March 26.

That game will take place during the international break, where the Premier League and Championship take a break while League One and League Two carry on.

Games in the third and fourth tiers do get postponed, however, due to players being called up by their countries, with at least three call-ups for one side leading to it being eligible for applying for a game to be played at another time.

And thanks to the business conducted in January, that could be the case for Wanderers.

Dion Charles could get called up by Northern Ireland for upcoming friendlies versus Luxembourg and Hungary.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson could represent Iceland for fixtures against Finland and Spain, while Manchester City loanee James Trafford could be called up once again for England-under 20s.

Trafford was part of the last England squad in November and Andy Edwards' side have matches against Poland and Germany coming up.

Wanderers are selling tickets for the clash but have included a disclaimer stating that the date is subject to change owing to international fixtures and subsequent player call-ups.

It should be become clear in the next week or two if the game will go ahead as planned on March 26 or if it will have to be rearranged for a midweek encounter as international squads are named.
