Bollards at controversial Edinburgh junction destroyed hours after being installed

Bollards put in place to prevent drivers flouting the rules and turning left onto a busy Edinburgh road have been smashed within hours of being installed.

As part of the new measures taken by Trams to Newhaven to prevent motorists turning left onto London Road from Leith Walk, which has caused various issues in recent days, safety "defenders" have been put in place, as well as the "phasing of traffic signals" and a revised approach on signage.

On Tuesday, December 20, Edinburgh Live reported how a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle ignoring the no left hand turn signs who later fled the scene.

Since the changes came into force, several members of the community have taken it upon themselves to stand in the middle of the road and act like a human barrier as cars have been captured trying to ram past them.

Despite large 'no left turn' signs in place before the junction, dozens of drivers have been recorded taking the illegal turn and continuing down London Road.

On Wednesday, December 21, the Trams to Newhaven tweeted an update regarding the new measure taken to tackle the issue further. They said: "London Road update: Mitigation measures have been put in place to improve movements and prevent illegal manoeuvres.

"Defenders installed, lights at Picardy amended and additional signage to be installed."

Just hours after the tweet, various users on Twitter were quick to point out that one of the defenders had been wiped out by a driver. One user tweeted a picture of the broken bollard and said: "We’re going to need a bigger bollard! One down already, as drivers still breaking the law."

Another said: "Not having much effect.. .just seen four turns in five minutes and blocked another half dozen."

The image, which shows two bright orange bollards and the base of a damaged one, was joined by another picture showing a white transit van manoeuvring around the two remaining bollards and into several people crossing while a green man was showing.

A more detailed statement on the changes were released via the Trams to Newhaven website, as it reads: "The project is aware of the issues at the London Road/Leith Walk junction with drivers failing to observe the left-hand turn ban despite a number of signs being in place.

"The decision to ban this movement was taken on the basis of extensive traffic modelling to ensure public transport efficiency and protect pedestrians.

"Notwithstanding, following engagement with Police Scotland over the number of motorists flouting the ban, the project has decided to take the following steps," followed by a list of the aforementioned changes.
