Body recovered after search for man trapped in vehicle during Storm Babet

OFFICERS have recovered the body of a man after searching for someone trapped in a vehicle in Aberdeenshire during Storm Babet.

Police Scotland launched a desperate search for a man who was stuck in floodwater near Marykirk on Friday.

The force has now said it has recovered the body of a man and a vehicle.

Formal identification is still to take place but the family have been informed, police said.

It takes the number of lives claimed by the storm to three in Scotland.

Earlier on Monday, police named a man who died after a tree struck his van near Forfar as 56-year-old John Gillan from Arbroath.

He was pronounced dead at the scene following the incident on the B9127 at Whigstreet which happened at around 5.05pm on Thursday, October 19.

In a statement, his family described him as a loving husband, dad, father-in-law and grandad, adding they were "devastated".

The storm also claimed the life of mother-of-three Wendy Taylor, 57, whose body was recovered from the Water of Lee, Glen Esk, around 4pm on Thursday.
