The body of a British man was found on an Australian beach after he had been missing for a week.

Police were called to the scene on Billy’s Beach in Corunna after receiving reports of a body that had been washed up on shore.

The 23-year-old was reported missing after he fell from a cliff on Mystery Bay Beach, in New South Wales, on January 18.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 6:40pm, alongside Marine Rescue NSW, SES VRA Rescue volunteers, and police, who searched the water.

However, he was not found, and the search was subsequently scaled back last week.

When his body later washed up on Billy’s Beach in Corunna, it was confirmed to be him.

A spokesperson said: “The body has been formally identified, and it is that of the missing 23-year-old UK national. A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

Chief Inspector Shane Jessep from the South Coast Police District said: “He wasn't a rock fisherman, it was a male sightseeing and … appears to have had an accident and slipped on the rocks.”

It comes just weeks after an Austrian woman had a close brush with death when she slipped from a steep ledge while she was exploring a popular climbing spot near Melbourne.

The 31-year-old fell six metres from a rock at Bushrangers Bay near the Mornington Peninsula on December 27.

Emergency services were called to the scene, where they reportedly found her choking on water while unconscious.

She was moved to higher ground to protect her from the incoming tide.

Ambulance Victoria's HEMS winched and airlifted her to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Paramedic Jo Wilton told 9News, “She was missing her teeth, so we believe she may have had a head injury as well.”

“On further examination, it looks like a hip injury, a wrist injury (as well).”

Wilton explained that the climber had attempted to scale the 12m-tall Elephant Rock before she fell.

“There's no actual tracks to get up to it, and on the way down, she has fallen, where there might have been some loose rocks,” she said.

“We walked across the rough terrain to reach her, and rescuers had to carry their equipment along the beach, and so it's very dangerous for our crews as well,” she added.
