Human remains found in a unit complex in Alderley in Brisbane's north are female, police have confirmed.
Cleaners contracted by the Department of Housing, found the body hidden in a void behind a brick wall at the Alderley Avenue property on Wednesday morning.
Police said the body, believed to have been there for some months, was partially buried, and tightly wrapped in clothing and bedding.
Police do not yet have an age for the victim, and her identity is unknown.
Forensic samples taken from the scene have been sent for testing, including fingerprint analysis from a number of items found there.
Detectives from Hendra Criminal Investigation Branch and the Homicide Unit have established Operation Uniform Pepperina to investigate the circumstances of the death.
Police are continuing to review missing person reports, with extensive scientific analyses expected to take some time to complete.
The body has since been removed and is now at a police facility.
The post-mortem is ongoing and examination of the crime scene is expected to be finalised today.
One resident at the unit complex, owned by Brisbane Housing Company, said on Thursday he had heard heated arguments between people at the complex.
Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
