A BODY has been found in the search for a missing woman who had gone for a walk on the Solway estuary but phoned to say she had got stuck in the mud.
Formal identification took place on Wednesday, with the body confirmed as belonging to Shona Campbell, 74.
Her family have been informed.
Campbell was staying at the Moss-Side caravan park in Cummertrees but had not been seen since the alarm was raised at about 5pm on Monday.
It is understood Campbell made the call to report getting into difficulties herself.
A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Around 17:40 on Tuesday, December 10 2024, the body of a woman was located in the Solway Estuary, Cummertrees, Annan.
“Formal identification has still to take place. However, the family of Shona Campbell, 74, who was missing in the area have been informed.
“The death is being treated as unexplained but not believed to be suspicious and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.”
The search involved a number of emergency services including the Coastguard, who said its search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick was called out about 5.15pm on Monday.
Members of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Nith Inshore Rescue also assisted with the search.
