Body found in search for missing Airdrie man who failed to turn up to work

A body has been found during the search for a missing man who failed to turn up to work.

The discovery was made by police officers today, who have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death. While formal identification is yet to take place, the family of missing Martin Simpson has been informed.

The 54-year-old was reported missing from Oakbank Street in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, on Monday, March 6. A colleague of the painter and decorator phoned his wife after he failed to show up for his lift to work.

In the last 24 hours, Martin's heartbroken family launched a frantic search party in a bid to trace his whereabouts.

His daughter, Donna, 34 told the Record earlier today: "My mum got up and noticed his keys and phone were still in the house. She thought he must have forgotten to take them because he was in a rush for work. His work phoned and said he didn't come out of the house for his usual morning lift.

"She thought she heard him getting ready for work in the bathroom on Monday morning but now we think that was my little sister Sophie. We don't have a clue what has happened. My dad is a family man, he doesn't do much outside of home."

A Facebook post from Donna later added: "Update... Thank you very much for everyone who has shared the post to help find our dad, unfortunately a body has been found and is confirmed as Martin.

"You are loved more than you know dad."

Officers will submit a report of the death to the Procurator Fiscal.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "A body has been found during searches for Martin Simpson, 54, who had been reported missing from Airdrie. His family have been made aware. There are no suspicious circumstances and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
