Family confirms body in river is missing boy, 11, days after friend found dead

A heartbroken family has confirmed the body of an 11-year-old boy who went missing with their teenage friend has been pulled from the Hudson River in New York after a major search.

Alfa Barrie's body was found floating in the river just before 7am today, days after his friend's body was recovered earlier this week.

New York City's Fire Department was said to be attending the water rescue at the Hudson River, near West 102nd Street- with the NYPD Harbor team set to recover the body.

Alfa was last seen in the Harlem area, near the 145th Street Bridge in the early hours of Saturday morning, May 13, at around 1.30am. He was last seen with Garrett Warren, 13.

Reports from the Citizen app, which allows locals to share what's going on around them, say the incident was reported at Riverside Drive and West 102nd - 99th Street.

A few hours later, the NYPD confirmed that the body is that of Alfa and informed his family, who said they didn't know that he and Warren were friends.

Authorities suspect currents carried him from the Harlem River to the Hudson River.

Alfa's older sister, Fatima Diallo, spoke of her brother, who was the youngest of six, saying: "This was the first time this has ever happened."

Garrett's body was pulled from the Harlem River on Thursday, May 18. NYPD helicopters had been spotted overhead near the river as divers began their work and the Medical Examiner arrived on Randall's Island.

Alfa reportedly lived in The Bronx, while Garrett lived in Upper Manhattan, according to police.

The boys were seen on surveillance video leaving one of their homes before walking together to 145th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem at around 6pm on Friday, May 12.

Alfa was last seen in the Harlem location, while Garrett was last seen in front of his home.

After Garrett was identified as the body pulled from the river on Thursday, his godmother, Christine Vargas spoke to local media.

"Right now is a trying time for both families," she said. "We ask that you guys keep them both in your prayers, we need all the prayers we can get."

A poster for the missing boys described Alfa as 5ft 2" tall, weighing 100 pounds. Garrett was described as 6ft tall and around 215 pounds.

Friends and family set up a memorial for Garrett, with those who knew him calling him 'Man Man' because of his build and size.
