Bobby Rydell dead: Singer and teen idol who starred in Bye Bye Birdie dies aged 79

Music legend Bobby Rydell has died at the age of 79.

The teen heartthrob singer who rose to fame throughout the 1950s and '60s passed away on Tuesday, according to TMZ.

The cause of death has not been revealed yet, but a source close to the star told the publication he had recently been diagnosed with pneumonia.

They insisted his death was not Covid related.

Bobby's biggest success in the industry came thanks to his 1960 release of the singles Volare and Wild One.

He later took up acting as his career moved on.

Real name Robert Louis Ridarelli, Bobby's big break came at the age of eight when he won a contest set up by jazz bandleader Paul Whiteman.

He went on to appear on the star's TV Teen Club talent show for a number of years, during which time he changed to his stage name.

As well as his most popular records, Bobby was known for tunes including Kissin' Time, We Got Love and Swinging School.

It was the latter which made him a musical icon in Philadelphia and ended up having streets named after him.

Paul McCartney also once said that the tune was an inspiration for The Beatles' huge hit titled She Loves You.

Bobby also starred on TV, stage and film and his acting career was most notable for his performance in the movie version of Bye Bye Birdie, in which he starred alongside Dick Van Dyke.
