BMW’s iX3 Locks Doors Briefly To Stop Cyclist Collisions

  • The iX3's exit-warning system uses side radar to briefly delay a door's release if it detects an approaching cyclist.
  • It debuts standard on the 2027 iX3 and will roll out to i3, X5 and 7 Series models.
  • Berlin's insurance association recorded 392 dooring crashes in 2024, about 8 percent of the city's bicycle wrecks.

BMW now lets its exit-warning system briefly hold a door closed if a cyclist is coming up the bike lane. The Neue Klasse feature appears first on the new iX3 as standard kit, not as a buried option.
