North Tyneside Council has responded to claims that vehicles have been damaged by potholes on Blyth Road by inviting affected residents to file an insurance claim. The local authority said that the potholes, on the road from Whitley Bay caravan park to The Delaval Arms public house, were hidden beneath standing water.
Work has now begun to clear away the water and repair the road. Temporary traffic lights are in place until the repairs are complete.
Many residents had vented their frustrations on social media after having their vehicles damaged. If you have been affected by the potholes, here’s how to file an insurance claim.

How to claim for pothole damage with North Tyneside Council?
Those wishing to make a claim will need to fill out a “damage to personal property insurance claim form”. This is available from the council’s website or a copy can be requested by emailing claims@northtyneside.gov.uk.
The form does clarify "completion of this form does not imply an acceptance of liability on the part of North Tyneside Council". The section for motorists is section 5, which covers damage caused to motor vehicles.
Drivers are advised to provide as much information as possible, including any times and dates of damage caused. You will also be asked to provide details of your own insurance, as well as any evidence of the damage such as repair receipts or photographs, and two estimates of the value of any work required to make good the damage.
North Tyneside Council also advises that copies of your car ownership, car tax and MOT certificate should be provided alongside the form. It adds, “Where it is necessary for you to make an immediate repair, e.g. replace a tyre, we also require you to retain the damaged item for inspection by ourselves or our insurance company, claims may be invalidated if items are disposed of and/or destroyed.”
Once complete, the form should be returned to Claims & Insurance Section, Finance & Resources Directorate Floor 1 Right, Quadrant East, Silverlink North, Cobalt Business Park, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE27 0BY. If completely digitally, a copy can be emailed to claims@northtyneside.gov.uk.
