Mayo forward Tommy Conroy’s season is over after confirmation that the player has suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.
Conroy, who played the full game in Mayo’s 0-11 each draw with Donegal in last Sunday’s Allianz League opener, was back in action last night for his college NUI Galway’s win over Letterkenny IT in the Sigerson Cup when he sustained the injury.
With a rehabilitation period of around nine months, Conroy will not play for Mayo again this year and will likely not feature for his club, Neale, either.
Mayo manager James Horan commented: “Tommy is such a great person and player. We all wish him well during his rehabilitation.
“Tommy will still play a huge part in Mayo's season and will remain very much part of the panel. Unfortunately, injuries like this are part of sport.
“I know all the players will rally around Tommy and I am sure it will galvanise the entire team, but I know his injury will inspire other players to drive forward, step up and follow in his boots.”
It’s the second year in succession that Mayo have lost a key forward for the bulk of the season through a long-term injury, with top scorer Cillian O’Connor still not having returned to action having ruptured his Achilles tendon against Clare in the Allianz League last June.
Another forward, Jason Doherty, made his first appearance for the county since August 2019 last Sunday, scoring 0-3, having recovered from two cruciate injuries in quick succession.
