Researchers took blood plasma from people who had just finished a week-long meditation retreat, dripped it onto neurons growing in a dish, and watched the cells extend longer branches than they did with the same people's pre-retreat plasma.
That experiment sits at the center of a UC San Diego study of 20 healthy adults, published in Communications Biology in November 2025. The paper has since traveled widely through science aggregators. What has traveled much less is what the journal did to it on July 25, 2026.
An author correction rewrote the paper's title to clarify that the study was observational rather than interventional. It added text to the Results and Methods specifying which analyses had been pre-registered and which had not. And it updated the competing interests statement to clarify co-author Joe Dispenza's interests and to state those of senior author Hemal H. Patel.
None of that is a retraction. All of it changes how the study should be read.
What 33 Hours of Guided Meditation Actually Involved
The 20 participants were drawn from 561 people who volunteered out of 1,444 registered attendees at a seven-day residential program led by Joe Dispenza, held in San Diego in April 2022.
The schedule was intense: 25 hours of lectures emphasizing the body's self-healing capacity and the mind's power to shape lived reality, 33 hours of guided meditation using Kundalini techniques delivered with atmospheric music, and 5 hours of group healing rituals in which six to eight "healers" surrounded one "healee."
The healing component followed an open-label placebo model. Participants knew the practices were presented as placebos, procedures without an active medical ingredient that can still produce effects through expectation, social connection, and shared ritual. Eleven participants were experienced practitioners; nine were novices. No psychedelics or other drugs were involved.
Before and after, participants underwent functional MRI while resting and while following a guided meditation, and gave blood for proteomic, metabolomic, immune, and exosome RNA analysis.
The Plasma Result Is the Strangest Part
The UC San Diego announcement lists six categories of change.
Meditation reduced connectivity in brain regions associated with internal mental chatter and lowered whole-brain modularity, which the team reads as more efficient information flow. Post-retreat plasma applied to cultured PC12 cells produced significantly longer neurites from day four onward. Cells treated with post-retreat plasma showed higher basal glycolytic rates, a shift toward faster sugar-burning energy production.
Blood levels of the body's own opioids rose, with beta-endorphin and dynorphin both increasing on confirmatory assays. Inflammatory and anti-inflammatory protein indices went up together, which the researchers read as adaptive immune modulation rather than simple suppression. Exosome RNA shifted in pathways tied to neurotransmission.
Patel framed the point as measuring changes across many biological systems at once rather than documenting relaxation. "This isn't about just stress relief or relaxation; this is about fundamentally changing how the brain engages with reality and quantifying these changes biologically," he said.
Mystical Scores Rose, and the Psilocybin Comparison Went Further
Participants completed the Mystical Experience Questionnaire, a 30-item instrument used heavily in psychedelic research. Average scores rose from 2.37 before the retreat to 3.02 after, at p = 0.03.
Patel went on to compare the results directly with drug studies. "We're seeing the same mystical experiences and neural connectivity patterns that typically require psilocybin, now achieved through meditation practice alone," he said.
That comparison is doing a lot of promotional work. The study ran no psychedelic comparison arm. The correlations between questionnaire scores and biological measures were exploratory, ran in both directions, and involved 20 people. The July correction specifically added labeling to separate pre-registered analyses from analyses that were not.
No Control Group, and a Disclosure Worth Reading
There was no control group. Every participant received the full package, so nothing separates meditation from the lectures, the healing rituals, the group setting, the change in diet and sleep, or simply spending a week away from ordinary life. The authors say so plainly, citing logistical limits, and note they plan to test each component separately.
The sample was 20 self-selected healthy adults, more than half of them already practicing these techniques, which is not a population from which clinical conclusions travel easily. Blood draw times varied by up to eight hours, diet was not standardized, and fasting was controlled only for the 30 minutes before collection.
Funding came from the InnerScience Research Fund, which backs a multimillion-dollar UC San Diego meditation initiative, alongside a Veterans Administration Research Career Scientist Award. UC San Diego's release discloses that Dispenza is employed by Encephalon, Inc., the company offering the retreat, and the July correction expanded the competing interests statement in the paper itself.
The team is explicit that controlled trials in patient populations are still needed before anyone claims clinical benefit, and that how long these changes last is unknown. Anyone managing depression, chronic pain or an immune disorder should make changes only in consultation with their own clinician. The group's separate work on mindfulness and pain shows what a controlled design in this field can look like.
