With all the energy of a grandma forcefully stuffing a tenner into your pocket, Blizzard Entertainment is slipping more freebies into the hands of Overwatch players because, like grandma, the company's just happy that you're here again.
"Guess our weekend plans are officially booked now," today's tweet from the Overwatch account reads, alongside the announcement that players will be receiving five free lootboxes and double XP on all matches for this entire weekend - February 20 to February 23 - "as a token of appreciation for keeping the matches rolling."
"Thank you for a warm reception to Season 1," it adds. All you have to do to claim the free lootboxes is simply log into the game at any point this weekend. Double XP should also automatically apply after each match you play during that timeframe.
Overwatch Season 1 is somewhat of a fresh start for the perennial hero shooter, welcoming five fresh faces to the game's growing roster and kicking a new narrative arc into gear that'll play out across this year's six seasons. Next year will then start anew, with a new narrative arc and a new 'Season 1'.
The allure of Jetpack Cat and mummy Domina is too big to ignore, it seems, as the game rocketed past its previous player peaks. And Blizzard has been quite keen to hold onto the game's freshly revived fanbase - just earlier this week, the company handed out more free lootboxes to everyone to make up for a pretty minor bug.
"We keep winning," one fan writes over on the Overwatch subreddit. "The devs are doing awesome work. The game is in its best shape ever."
