Blizzard finally reveals StarCraft open-world shooter, but it isn’t coming until 2030

StarCraft is finally coming back, but it’s not an RTS, and the players have a long wait ahead of them. Blizzard announced a new open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, ending years of reports, rumors, and leaks about the project. The game is coming in 2030.

The reveal cinematic focused on the Terran Dominion and its fight against the Zerg, with no gameplay footage. We only know the release year and that it’s an open-world shooter, but we don’t know the platforms, the exact release date, or anything about the gameplay. We also got a refreshed StarCraft logo, but it’s yet unknown whether just ‘StarCraft’ is the final title, or if the game gets a subtitle in the future.

The game is roughly four years away, and this immediately became a big talking point, with many questioning the logic behind announcing a project so far into the future, especially since we only saw a cinematic without any combat or open-world gameplay.

The project first surfaced publicly in 2024, when Jason Schreier revealed that former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay and a small Blizzard team had begun working on a new StarCraft shooter. Hay joined Blizzard in 2022 after spending more than a decade at Ubisoft, including senior roles across the Far Cry series.

Blizzard added considerably more fuel to those reports earlier this year by hiring a lead designer for an unannounced AAA open-world shooter. The job listing also called for Unreal Engine experience, a notable departure for a studio that has traditionally built its games on internal technology.

There were unconfirmed reports about a potential deal between Nexon and Blizzard for a new StarCraft game. It’s currently unknown if that deal has any substance to it, or if it’s in any way connected to this newly announced title.

Blizzard has only committed to 2030 for now, and we have a long while before anything substantial materializes around the project. At the very least, the Blizzard shooter speculation will end with this.
