Blind man steps in to look after war veteran dad for 'overworked' carers amid staff crisis

The blind son of an elderly war veteran has been forced to provide personal care for his dad due to a lack of home carers working at his semi-sheltered accommodation complex.

Russell Macmillan has been called out to Homeshaw House in Newton Mearns in sub-zero temperatures three times in the last week due to care staff being unable to get to his dad.

The 96-year-old veteran requires home care at night to ensure his continence equipment is set up, supervise him taking his medication, and help him get into bed. His son Russell has described the care system as 'broken' with overworked carers missing allocated visits.
