Indian equities enter October bruised after one of the sharpest monthly sell-offs in recent years, with the Nifty falling nearly 6% in September and logging its eighth straight weekly decline, the longest losing run in 25 years. The Nifty and Sensex both fell sharply through September as foreign investors stepped up selling, crude oil stayed elevated, the rupee weakened and US bond yields climbed above 5%. The September series was even harsher as Nifty lost more than 1,400 points.
The main pressure came from foreign investors. FIIs ended their two-month buying streak in September and sold heavily in Indian equities. The selling added to an already difficult year for foreign flows, with outflows for 2026 crossing Rs 2.5 lakh crore, according to NSDL data.
