Blade Runner 2099 showrunner says Ridley Scott "shepherded" her through making new Prime Video show, reveals post-war plot with Replicant uprising

Ryan Gosling in Blade Runner 2049.

The first look at Blade Runner 2099 is here, and showrunner Silk Luisa has finally given us some details about the plot, along with some pretty rad news about working one-on-one with franchise creator (and absolute legend) Ridley Scott.

"There's been a replicant uprising that feels like it's been bubbling up," Luisa told Entertainment Weekly. The spin-off show, which stars Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer, is set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049. It was first announced in 2021, and finished filming in 2024. "And between 2049 and 2099, that's happened. So the war has happened and the humans have lost. Our worst fears imagined. The replicants are now the power brokers of the city. And humans are the second-class citizens."

The Blade Runner franchise began in 1982, with Scott's adaptation of the sci-fi novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The film underperformed at the box office, but would go on to become a cult classic.

Though Scott was also an executive producer on Blade Runner 2049, it seems he had more of a hands-on experience with the upcoming Prime Video show, which makes me even more excited. Especially since Scott previously expressed regret at not being able to direct Blade Runner 2049.

"It’s once in a lifetime to have your hero sit down with you and tell you what it was like making your favorite movie," Luisa said. "It was really important for Ridley to be a part of the development process. Because both visually and in terms of story, there are mythological canon points in his film that we're touching, and it was really important to both get his blessing and have his insight into what his original intentions were."

Blade Runner 2099 is coming in 2027. In the meantime, check out our guide to the most exciting upcoming TV shows to fill out your watchlist.
