Blackwall Tunnel to close over two weekends for Silvertown roadworks

Transport for London (TfL) has warned drivers of “long delays” to journeys as Blackwall tunnel is closing to southbound traffic for a further two weekends.

The east London tunnel will be closed this weekend for roadworks on a new road layout on the A102. It is part of the Silvertown Tunnel Project, which will see a new tunnel built beneath the Thames for 2025.

It will link Silvertown to the Greenwich Peninsula in east London, aiming to reduce congestion and improve reliable journeys at the Blackwall Tunnel.

Latest scheduling for works will see the tunnel close this weekend and reopen for Monday. It will close again on the weekend of August 17.

The weekend closures will run from 00:01 Saturday morning (or Friday midnight) until 5am on Monday morning.

The tunnel will remain open to northbound traffic, but with occasional diversion.

TfL said it “expects roads and alternative river crossings in east and central London to be extremely busy with long delays” to journeys.

It added there are likely to be queues along the A13 westbound between Canning Town and Whitechapel, and on the approaches to Rotherhithe Tunnel. Those planning to drive through central London have been advised to use tube and rail services where possible and to check the Journey Planner and TfL Go app.

Meanwhile, people travelling by bus have been told the 108 bus route will split in two during the weekend closures. It will operate between Lewisham and North Greenwich, and between Canning Town and Stratford from 10pm on Fridays.

Woolwich ferry services are to operate as normal amid weekend closures, despite long queues expected for those boarding the first ferry.
