Gaurav Gogoi, Congress leader and deputy leader of opposition, is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Jorhat. The constituency, which was a Congress stronghold for 18 years till 2009, has recorded the BJP’s win in the last two general elections.
Gaurav Gogoi is facing incumbent MP Topon Kumar Gogoi, who had won with a margin of over one lakh votes. In the run-up to the election, Jorhat has seen rallies by BJP stalwarts and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while a visit by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi is also on the cards.
In conversation with Pratyush Deep, Gogoi spoke about the BJP’s women-centric schemes, defection of Congress leaders, the controversy surrounding the Citizenship Amendment Act, and his vision for health and infrastructure in Assam.
“Women are going to vote against the BJP for conning them and taking their votes in the name of schemes which have no impact on the ground and no impact on their lives.”
