Bishop of Lincoln: Stephen Conway, 68, resigns amid sex assault probe

  • Police arrested the 68-year-old in February regarding an allegation of a sexual assault occurring between 2018 and 2025, releasing him on conditional bail.
  • The Church of England confirmed that a safeguarding complaint concerning Conway had been referred to the relevant authorities.
  • Conway was previously criticised in an independent review into the Church of England's handling of prolific abuser John Smyth.
  • The Bishop of Grantham, the Rt Rev Dr Nicholas Chamberlain, will continue as Acting Bishop of Lincoln until a successor is appointed.
