Biologists with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are actively engaged in the rescue efforts for manatees affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The commission has emphasized the importance of aiding both residents and visitors in recovering from the impacts of the hurricane while also focusing on the rehabilitation and conservation of these gentle giants.
If individuals encounter a stranded, injured, or deceased manatee, it is advised to refrain from handling the creature and instead contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline or a local wildlife rehabilitation center. These animals may require specialized medical attention to ensure their well-being.
Over the weekend, the agency successfully rescued a manatee that had become stranded at the end of a runway at MacDill Air Force Base. The manatee had sought refuge at the base as water levels rose during the storm, but was unable to return to the bay once the water receded.
