NEW DELHI: A total of 23,907 birds of 159 species belonging to 53 families were recorded at Delhi Development Authority’s seven biodiversity parks during a counting exercise which was conducted from February 23-26. Of the total species, 94 resident, 57 migratory, three passage migratory and five summer migratory species were found.
The counting exercise was conducted under the guidance of experts from the biodiversity parks and also involved students and locals. “The number of encountered bird species was compared with the eBird data of February 2022 for the entire Delhi region. The biodiversity parks recorded more than 75% of bird species in just four days as compared to the entire of Delhi in a month. Many species, including brown shrike, Indian eagle owl, white-eyed buzzard, Stolizka’s bushchat, and paradise flycatcher, were exclusively recorded,” said Faiyaz Khudsar, incharge scientist, biodiversity parks programme.
