Binman grins in court after smashing neighbour's conservatory with hammer

A bitter long running feud between neighbours led to one of them climbing onto his shed roof and attacking next door’s conservatory, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.

Binman Steven Poland wielded a hammer to repeatedly smash the PVC cladding of the structure, which overhung his garden by centimetres. His horrified neighbour, 63-year-old Harold Smith, who was enjoying a quiet afternoon with his wife, desperately tried to stop him by blasting him with a hosepipe.

A court heard on Tuesday, February 14 the action only temporarily halted Poland’s rampage and he carried on hitting it with the hammer and throwing the broken pieces onto the conservatory roof. CCTV footage of Poland’s behaviour was played to a judge who said, “I can only think the reason that you took a hammer to that cladding was out of spite.”
