Although Bills linebacker Von Miller hasn’t hinted at any plans to retire soon, he’s already thinking ahead to his next step after his NFL career.
Miller decided to attend the NFL scouting combine this week in order to seek advice from current NFL general managers, as he wants to become a GM once he retires.
“It’s what I want to do,” Miller said, via 9News. “I don’t have any experience. I know what a great football team looks like. I know what a winning football team looks like. A great staff, great equipment guys, great athletic trainers. I know what that looks like, I know what it takes to build those teams but that’s it.
“So I’m here to meet with guys, for the guys to give me instructions on what to do with my right foot next and what to do with my left foot next. And make the first steps to making this happen.”
Miller admitted that his dream to become a general manager began when he was in college at Texas A&M, as he was thinking of what else he wanted to do if his attempts to make the NFL as a player didn’t work out. The two-time Super Bowl champion’s passion for becoming a GM came back after working with former Broncos GM John Elway, who took his own position over a decade after retiring from the NFL.
“To see a former player come back in the league and be a GM and win a Super Bowl as a player and win a Super Bowl as a GM?” Miller said. “Oh my gosh. That’s where the dream really started. John Elway won a Super Bowl on the field and off the field. He’s the GOAT. And then you leave and you go to L.A. and you’re around Les Snead and you think you can be a cool GM, too. And then you leave there and go to the Buffalo Bills with Brandon Beane and you think, this job is really attractive. What do I have to do next to make this happen?”
Miller has no plans to retire soon, though, so this dream remains in the distant future. He also still has five more seasons left on his contract with the Billls.
Miller played through Week 11 in the 2022 season, but missed the rest of the year after tearing his ACL. He had surgery to repair the knee injury in December and is still recovering.
