The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs have had one of the budding rivalries in the NFL over the past few seasons. The two have played in some of the more memorable games in the league recently, constantly adding new chapters to what has been a wildly entertaining story.
But as far as the results go, the “rivalry” is rather one-sided. At least when it comes to the most important games.
Bills 3-0 In Regular Season, But 0-3 When It Really Counts
Since the beginning of the 2021 calendar year, the Chiefs and Bills have faced off on six occasions. The record between the two is currently even, with each team nabbing three wins. And to further show just how evenly matched the two sides are, each of the last four games has ended in a one-score margin. The point differential in those games combined is 16 points.
Despite the matchup technically being even at 3 games apiece, the Chiefs are certainly the ones that have the upper hand. Of the 6 games played, three of them have come during the postseason, and Kansas City has been victorious in each and every one of them.
The Bills have been one of the strongest teams in the NFL over the past few seasons, typically lumped in with a handful of other Super Bowl favorites. They’ve qualified for the postseason each year since 2019, but it has been Patrick Mahomes and company that are typically standing in their way. Of their last four playoff losses for Buffalo, three have come at the hands of the Chiefs.

The defeats have come in heartbreaking fashion. Perhaps the most notable was the Divisional Round matchup in January 2022. It looked as though Buffalo was going to advance past their nemesis, when Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce turned a 3-point deficit with 13 seconds left into an incredible overtime victory. Most recently, Bills kicker Tyler Bass missed a game-tying field goal as the clock ticked down during the 2023 Divisional Round meeting that eliminated them after yet another promising season.
Once again, the Bill and Chiefs are two of the top teams in the AFC for the 2024 season. Sunday’s game between the two sides in Buffalo will hold some serious weight, given that a Chiefs’ victory would create a 3-game gap between them (plus a tiebreaker).
But if you asked Josh Allen and the Bills if they’d rather win this game or the inevitable matchup between the two sides in the playoffs, they’d surely choose the latter.
